KDAT Treated Lumber

What is KDAT Treated Lumber?

When southern pine is treated, it undergoes a process in which it is soaked with a liquid solution of copper azole preservative. This “wet” board is then either shipped out to consumers, or it undergoes a drying process called KDAT, or Kiln Dried After Treatment. KDAT is a method in which lumber is dried in a controlled environment before being sold. The KDAT process takes place in a giant kiln where controlled temperatures, allowing airflow between each board, ensure the lumber is dried uniformly. Traditional decking without this extra step often take 8 months to a year to dry out, making it less desirable as it is exposed to the harsh sun while it is drying. Boards dried in this way are more likely to cup due to the top surface drying out faster than the bottom, and they will often start to grey since they aren’t sealed for protection. It is recommended that KDAT decking is stained immediately after installation to ensure maximum protection.

Below are some of the benefits of using KDAT Treated Lumber:

  • It can be pre-stained immediately
  • Fast staining reduces twisting, cupping, and warping
  • Less shrinkage problems
  • Lighter material make it easier to transport and work with
  • Environmentally sound; there's less chance of leaching since re-drying assures maximum fixation within the wood
  • Better fastener holding power

About the Author

Hello! I’m David, the General Manager here at Woodland Deck Company. I was introduced to construction at a young age working alongside my Dad. With love for the outdoors, I decided to pursue a degree in horticulture from The Ohio State University. After college, I was fortunate to gain experience working in the landscape industry which eventually led me to Woodland Deck Company.

The thing I like most about Woodland Deck is the great group of people I get to work with daily! If I could describe the culture in one word, it would have to be “family”. One thing I enjoy the most is our Monday morning huddles. Everyone gets to share their “highs” and “lows” of the week. It’s a great time to get to know and encourage one another.

I am blessed to be married to my high school sweetheart and to raise our two beautiful daughters together. On weekends we enjoy spending time outdoors or with our extended families. Some of our best memories have been vacationing in Hilton Head and Florida.

When I find free time, I enjoy a round of golf with friends or fishing in my pond. A few passions of mine are gardening, woodworking, and playing the drums.

I look forward to helping you create your outdoor place of enjoyment!
